Have the Chaser's gone too far?

Journal Entry: Thu Jun 4, 2009, 4:42 AM

Watch and decide. [link] :|

Involving terminal cancer and sick kids, admittingly, is a bit sick.

But I have to say, a lot of people have taken this completely the wrong way. Paticularly in Australia, thanks to stupid news channels ad programs, people have been outraged by this.

I'm only 14, but I know better that it was not the point they were trying to get across. Sure, it may have intentionally showed the greediness of terminally sick kids with cancer, which was low and stupid. But it was also aimed at the leading charity, Make A Wish Foundation. The amount of money they earn and recieve is incredible, being able to get so many kids to Disneyland and to their favourite celebrities. In fact, they probably earn hundreds of thousands to millions a year, significant amounts of money.

Of course, the money isn't wasted, but it could be used a lot better. There are thousands of kids being killed by the wars and civil unrest in the Middle-east, and millions of kids and families dying in Africa.
The last phrase that the Chasers used in the segment, "... when the only going to die anyway." was the killer. I was horrified by this.
Until I thought about it. Makes a lot of sense if you ask me.
Just stuffs everything we take for granted in Australia in their faces. :B

I'm not saying that we shouldn't make these wishes come true by not donating to these donations. It's just the proportions of the amount.
It'd be much better actually donating it to the Cancer Foundation. So they're some justice for the people who are trying to cure cancer. As well as the World Vision for poor countries all over the world.

Cancer's never a good thing. Bad things will happen, things will die from it. I have a friend who's presently in an isolation bubble from cancer, survival rates pretty low, so this isn't an irrational argument. :<
Fix the things that are possible, I think.

i totally agree with you!
they did go abit far but it was for comedic purposes, and probs some people found it funny, so the skit didn't go to waste.

I disagree. We don't know how to cure Cancer and that's the problem. I think everyone knows that there won't be an end-all cancer cure for a long time. These are 6-11 year olds that have cancer you're talking about. I found the whole "realistic wish" thing disgusting. In fact, if being realistic is the whole problem with the foundation, everyone should realize that we're all going to die at one point so we should just stop trying to make others happier and worry about ourselves and no one else.

I am annoyed that you're rationalizing not trying to make the life of someone before they die actually enjoyable.

To be honest it was only meant as a joke, a bit of humor.
Before you yell at me saying stuff like 'you wouldnt be saying that if your family had cancer' my mum did have breast cancer when i was 2 years old.
Thats all really :P im not offended or disgusted by it because there's a lot worse things going on.
Whenever 1 human dies in the UK a big fuss is made, yet millions of animals are slaughtered everyday... what makes us so dam special?

Mate, I've got a friend dying of cancer. He can't leave the hospital because he's in an isolation bubble. He's worse then the kdis on this video. :| Maybe might through the end of July. But I'm not sure. We're still helping him as much as we can.

Yes, I know the Chaser's went a bit far. The whole idea of giving them a stick is outrageous. But there is too much money being put into those charities: the idea, I hope, was aimed at the Make a wish foundation. They almost went bankrupt once from a wish, but they still accepted it.

I'm just saying I agree with the ratios of money put into the Make A Wish compared to charitiies that actually save lives.
It's just our society. We'd rather save some kids with terminal cancer and help them, then save millions of children in Africa with curable diseases who are going through just the same thing.

(the kids in that video are actually actors, maybe that's what making me agree with the point.)

Look, it was a fucking stupid thing to say.
People who were offended had every right to be so.
But it's not like they should be crucified for it, it was just a horrid mistake.

Anyway, I agree with you man, it's a good cause and all, but there are much more worthwhile charities.
Yeah they're kids, and it's nice to make them happy before they die, but there are more important things to spend your money on.

The treatment of cancer is just about most important charity there is, 1/2 men are diagnosed with cancer in their life, and 1/3 women.
Cancer is the most common way to die a long, painful death, anything we do to reduce that likelihood is significantly more worth-while than making a few unfortunate children happy.

Poor friend :(
Poor you :(
But um, why do they need to be in an isolation bubble?
Cancer isn't contagious or anything.
