I feel really old.
I've just been looking back at more older emotes from when I was twelve: reminiscing on the old days. It kind of looks like... that nothing has really changed. I might even say that the animations were better and more fluent, the expressions as well, and even the shading, which has only been modified slightly (I still love `darkmoon3636's 'central' or '
Ever since `darkmoon3636 left dA, my inspiration levels remain lower. I adored her shading, and that sort of encouraged my present shading and emotes/animations today.
The emoticon community is great as well... but it was also different back then. There were way less projects. Emotes were made for solely MSN purposes, and only the few odd ones weren't. Now, their are ones with backgrounds: some which I wouldn't call emotes, or even pixel art to that matter.
Anyways, I'm probably just grumpy from being tired.

I got in smiley-emoting because I wanted them for use on my forums. I make mostly static due for that reason. I have always felt that emotes should be made to be used and shared. Though, I can appreciate and respect when an artist wants to keep their work out of the public's reach.
I find that shading is a matter of preference. I happen to like less shiney so that facial detail is clearer. I just find it frustrating when people say I am not as good/skilled because I choose to do it differently.
Anyhow, sorry. Your post just got me thinking about this all and I'm rambling. I wasn't around 2 years ago, so I can't really comment more than I have.
Oh, and darkmoon is a girl.

I miss `darkmoon3636 too. I believe I wouldn't start making emoticons if it weren't for her. :c
Ah, the projects. You're right: there are too many right now. Some months ago, I was going to release a project called "Thank you Livius", but there were a bunch of projects going on that they really demotivated me to launch mine.
About the emoticons with background, I can't say anything against it. I've even made some. In 2006.

I'm fine with the way emotes are "evolving" right now. I mainly just use plz accoutns for msn so I have no problem with emotes being big or having backgrounds
But I do agree with there being a lot of projects now... too many :/
